The Ministry of Justice has announced a new competition for salaried employment judges.
The competition formally opens next month, on 19 June 2018. The Ministry of Justice is looking to appoint 54 employment judges across England & Wales, at a FTE salary of £108,171 (plus London allowances where appropriate). Unusually, previous judicial experience (in this context, typically as a fee-paid employment judge) is not required; possibly in recognition that the freeze on recruitment in recent years means that there is a generation of lawyers who will not have had experience as a fee-paid judge.
The new appointments will be announced in January 2019, although they are unlikely to take up work immediately as there will need to be training and induction first.
I have been told, informally, that the Ministry of Justice intends to launch a second competition, for fee-paid employment judges, once this recruitment round is complete.
